    Croissant Day

    Image of Croissants

Attention all pastry lovers! It’s National Croissant Day and we’re here for you with interesting facts, tips and products to celebrate the flaky, buttery croissant!

When you hear the word ‘croissant’ you may immediately think of France, however, these pastries actually originated in Austria during the 13th Century, originally called Kipferl. The first recorded evidence of croissants being served in Paris wasn’t until the 1800s, when a baker named August Zang started serving Kipferl in his Paris bakery. The people of Paris started to call them ‘croissants’ because of the crescent shape of the pastries.

    Bread or pastry?

Croissants have characteristics of both bread and pastry as they are made from a yeasted dough, like bread, but laminated with thin layers, like puff pastry. A croissant’s flaky texture is achieved through steam as well as the extra rise given from the yeast.  Despite having some similarities to bread, croissants are actually a type of pastry due to their high fat content.

    All about the filling

With it’s bread-like versatility, croissants are suited to a wide range of both savoury and sweet fillings.

A classic savoury filling, sure to satisfy your customer morning cravings, a cheese and ham croissant! Step up your game by serving them hot and maybe introducing a bechamel sauce for extra creamy indulgence. For a more elegant option, why not serve a smoked salmon and poached egg croissant?

For the sweet-toothed customers, a vibrant fruit filled croissant with fresh cream or a punchy preserve might just hit the spot. If not, an indulgent chocolate-filled one definitely will!
