From the 1st of October 2023, England is taking a big step towards a greener future by introducing a ban on several single-use plastic items. The ban includes food and drink containers which are made from polystyrene, as well as plastic cutlery and plastic balloon sticks.
An exemption to the ban applies to food and drink containers if the item is used as packaging and is already filled at the point of sale. However, businesses are still encouraged to make eco-friendly alternatives where possible. An exemption also applies if you are selling the containers to another business.
The ban aims to reduce plastic pollution and waste which cause serious damage to the environment. Many single-use plastics are difficult to recycle and can take hundreds of years to break down.
